RV'ing Tips
Travelling with an RV is a great way to save money by getting the best of both worlds: transportation and a place to stay! While the traveling is fun it does cost money to fill up the tank. You do have ways to save on those fill ups so you have more money to enjoy the vacation. Saving fuel is a key factor in keeping your vacation expenses low.
One thing you can do is find a gas station near you that offers a loyalty card. Often this means you get money off the gas price per gallon. In some cases they team up with a grocery store, where you buy certain products and reduce the price more. Often these cards will hold those savings for a period of time. Consider using this card to fill up the tank the first time. If you can get enough savings built up you can often pay under a dollar a gallon. Plus you can pick up the non-perishable items you need for the trip. You can pick up some of the cold items as well if you remember to carry an ice chest and enough ice.
Keeping the fridge empty during travel is not only safe because of the risk of the door opening mid drive. It also keeps the food from getting a temperature fluctuation. While the ice chest with the cold food is going to add weight, it will keep you from getting sick. Also keep the water and propane tanks empty if you can. For campsites with hook ups you can keep the water tank empty while traveling. As for the propane consider how much you actually need for your trip. Propane in itself is also not a cheap fuel it costs sixty dollars or more per tank. For RV’s that just have electric ranges you can often skip the propane altogether.
Keep excess weight from unneeded items away. Do you really need to pull a car? Do you really need to carry a boat? You can fish from the shoreline, and many campsites offer transportation into town. Also consider the length of your trip, can a closer campsite provide the same? Staying closer to home will save fuel for the RV. If you must travel great distances map out the local gas prices ahead of time. This way you can find the cheapest price before you head out.
