SYRACUSE N.Y-- On Sunday, hundreds came out to the RV show at the state fairgrounds, some looking for new vehicles, others just browsing. Many spoke fondly of County Executive Joanie Mahoney's idea to build a year-long RV campground in Syracuse.
"We can go to a beach on Long Island, where there are very few hotels and have your own paradise for a few days. We go to the Caribbean every year, but you can't go to the Caribbean every week, so you go to the Atlantic," said Ralph Gallicchio, Long Island resident.
Th would be in addition to horse shows and music hosted at the nearby amphitheater on Onondaga Lake.
"They do have some camping at the fairgrounds, it's just not that nice. There are some spots to camp and power up. For the fair, a lot of people do camp for that and different events. Throughout the summer they camp, but it's not a campground they would have if they built a nice one," said Paul Oot, Seven O's RV Sales Employee.
While many acknowledge having an RV campground near the state fair would be convenient, they also said there could be some downfalls.
"It would certainly take away business from the campgrounds that are already established. I wasn't aware of any of this but it would certainly take years to get permits," saiod Kimberly Grant of Windsor.
All of this is still in works, though. The County Executive said Governor Cuomo must approve it before it can go to the state senate and assembly.
