New to the RV lifestyle? It may not be as glamorous of a lifestyle as you’re used to, but with a commitment to proper maintenance and cleanliness, it can be the perfect way to live. If you and your family are struggling to keep your home-on-wheels fresh and sanitary, check out these tips for maintaining a clean RV all year long.

1. Clean the inside and outside

Ever cleaned the inside of a window and noticed it’s still dirty? With RVers frequently driving through all types of terrain, it’s easy for your vehicle’s windows to become caked with dried rain drops, dirt, and bug remains. Using a regular window cleaner should do the trick, but for larger windows like your windshield, you may want to invest in an extendable squeegee to make the job easier.

2. Transfer your waste tanks.

Notice some foul odors creeping into the cabin of your vehicle? It’s likely time to transfer the waste in your tanks to a nearby dump station. Just make sure to keep a few pairs of thick rubber gloves, a bucket, and a hose in your vehicle at all times in order to dump your waste. If you don’t, you may end up like Robin Williams in the infamous dumping scene in the movie RV.

3. Remember the magic erasers.

Affordable and easy to pack, magic erasers are our go-to cleaning supply for any length of road trip. Just add water to the sponge and wipe away any dirt or stains that your RV has collected. However, since these erasers are made out of fine sandpaper, we recommend reading forums on how to use magic erasers for properly cleaning without damaging your vehicle. Pro tip: if you buy in bulk on Amazon before heading out on the road, you can save a significant amount of money.

4. Don’t forget the fridge.

Before leaving for a long day of hiking or closing up your RV after an extended road trip, the last thing you’ll want to do is forget to empty the fridge of any spoilable food. If you do, you’ll end up with a stinky vehicle and an unbearable odor that hangs around for days. Items to especially look out for: cheese, meat, fish, and milk. Add this to-do to your daily and/or weekly cleaning list to avoid any unpleasant scents.

5. Trade in the old propane tank.

Is your rusting propane tank a sight for sore eyes? While it doesn’t impact the interior of your RV, a deteriorating tank will age your vehicle faster than you might imagine. Consider swapping the old tank out for a new one, but if you prefer to reuse and refill your tanks, a fresh coat of paint on the tank can make your RV look brand new. You’ll be surprised at how big of a difference this can have on your RV’s outward appearance!
