RV Upgrades
There are many RVers who need high-speed Internet access while on a trip. You may be a writer or photographer who uses your Internet access for work. Maybe you simply want to keep up with the goings on in the world or keep in touch with friends and family. If you plan properly for your particular needs, you can get consistent daily high-speed Internet access.
WiFi Services
You can use WiFi services available at RV parks, public libraries, restaurants, cafes and many other advertised “hot spots.” Even most McDonald’s Restaurants have WiFi. The service is normally available within 100 to 300 feet. You need an inexpensive WiFi receiver, about $40, to plug into a USB port of your computer.
If you want to keep costs low and only need access once or twice a day, this is probably your best bet. It will work better if you will be staying to well-traveled routes rather than traveling for weeks at a time through the mountains or through the Alaskan wilderness.
Cellular Service
Do you have data service with your cellular plan? If so, you can access the Internet through the data card in your computer. This method works within 30 miles of a cell tower. Talk to your cell phone provider about details and prices.
Satellite Service
With satellite service, you can connect from virtually anywhere to virtually anywhere. As long as you have a clear view of a portion of the sky, you will be in touch. If you are planning an extended trip through wilderness areas, you should consider this as a safety measure. With this service, you can call for help as soon as the system is mounted.
Prices range from $700 to $1,500 for a roof-mount system. Monthly service fees run around $60 a month. Be sure you’re your RV can store the dish and cabling while traveling. It will require approximately one-half-hour to install after you park.
To move further upscale, you can buy automatic, roof-mounted systems. It will cost more than $5,000 for equipment and usually less than $100 per month in service fees. When you park, you only need to press a button to engage the system.
